About Marcus




With 40 years' experience of professional journalism and public relations, Marcus is a best-selling author, podcaster and event host / guest speaker.
After working as a production assistant at Radio Trent in Nottingham in the early 1980's, alongside writing a regular sports column in a local magazine, Marcus joined the Newark Advertiser newspaper as a trainee reporter in September 1985.
Marcus had worked on Brian Tansley's popular Saturday Sport programme and soon became a qualified NCTJ-accredited news and sports reporter at the Advertiser, as well as launching a music column called Street Beat.
Interviewees for the music features included Martin Fry of ABC, Marti Pellow of Wet Wet Wet, BBC presenter Steve Wright and Virgin Records boss Sir Richard Branson.
Reporter & Presenter
In December 1988, Marcus joined the newsroom at BBC Radio Derby and was part of the award-winning team which reported on the Kegworth Air Disaster the following month.
He went on to produce and present his own chat show, In My Life, interviewing celebrities including acclaimed actor Sir Alan Bates, former government ministers Tony Benn and Edwina Currie, footballer Peter Shilton and Coronation Street's Bill Roache.
Marcus later moved to the BBC's headquarters at Broadcasting House in London, where he reported on national and international news (and showbiz stories) for forty local radio stations in the UK. He reported on the funeral of Princess Diana and the death of Frank Sinatra.
Olympics & PR
Returning to his home city of Nottingham, Marcus worked at BBC Radio Nottingham for 25 years, acting as news editor, producing news programmes, reading news bulletins and reporting.
Marcus reported live on various General Elections and Mansfield Mayoral elections, produced the station's live coverage of the 2012 Olympic Torch relay through Nottinghamshire, with over 12 on-location reporters & presenters, and won a BBC Gillard Gold during his production of the Breakfast Show.
In early 2021, he became Head of PR at Arch Communications in Nottinghamshire, teaming up with his former BBC colleague Matt Youdale. The company's work won a 2022 PRiDE Gold award (construction sector PR) from the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.
Podcaster & Author
Marcus' popular podcast Green Jumper has listeners in 90 countries and was named one of the best football podcasts in the world in the 2025 Sports Podcast Awards. He is the editor of the tribute website brianclough.com.
He has written five books about the legendary football manager Brian Clough and takes part in live events and signing sessions. The International Soccer Network described Marcus as 'the world's leading authority on Brian Clough.'
Marcus interviewed Brian several times and became the driving force behind the campaign for a statue of Cloughie in Nottingham.
In 2005, he brought together a small group of fundraisers who smashed their £60,000 target in 18 months. They then commissioned the statue which was unveiled by Mrs Clough in November 2008.
Marcus' books and live events have helped to raise money for the types of good causes Brian Clough supported. He also presented a cheque for £7,500 to the children's cancer ward at Nottingham's Queens Medical Centre on behalf of the Brian Clough Memorial Fund.
